Lakewood police bring Christmas to families in need

Lakewood police bring Christmas to families in need

Lakewood police officers swarmed a local Wal-Mart on Saturday to help those in need.

It was a holiday surprise that allowed children to play Santa for their families.

And it was a special assignment for Lakewood police officers - not transporting suspects, but kids.

"He came up to my house, and I was surprised," said one.

The children were chosen by the Lakewood officers' charity, which raised money for the event. Wal-Mart matched the donations made by the charity.

The youngsters' smiles tell the story.

Sixteen-year-old Crystal Paige was shopping for a brother, two sisters and a mom who'd been sick, off work - and couldn't afford presents.

"Kind of saves the money for other things - bills and stuff - instead of trying to buy presents," she says. "It helps a lot."

Crystal and 11 other young people got to spend $50 at Wal-Mart for each family member.

There were toys and games for siblings - but the kids also kept their parents in mind.

"They decided to get a microwave for their mother," Sgt. Mark Eakes said of the children he accompanied.

Two sisters put a microwave in one basket and a space heater in another. The family recently lost heat to their home.

"It's a reminder that we're all in this together," said Sgt. Andy Gildehaus.

Gildehaus said it's also a tribute to the four officers killed last year. It was the first time for this Lakewood "Shop with a Cop" event - and it turned into a well-run operation.

Once the kids have picked out what they want, they get checked out then take their gifts to a table for wrapping so that everything the kids picked out is a surprise to their families.

Crystal's mom and family - and all the others - were overjoyed that a Christmas complete with Santa just got a whole lot brighter.

Falling Forward: America’s Loss of Direction Since the End of the Cold War

Falling Forward: America’s Loss of Direction Since the End of the Cold War

The final nail in the USSR's coffin was naturally Afghanistan, the "Executioner of Empires". We have truly become that which we hated and feared. Fascinating that this is the case with individuals as well as empires!

Brad said...

The rationale for a globe-straddling military is economic, economic interests, corporate-capitalist interests. It is also because the U.S. intends to increase and strengthen its superiority and dominance over ALL other potential challengers to further these aims.

Far from not coming to terms with the end of the Cold War, its ending revealed that the US promoted a liberal-democratic model strictly to combat a "socialist" (but really a totalitarian) model. With that no longer a concern, the US aim of total world dominance through the spread of a corporate-capitalism that seems not incompatible with authoritarian structures, can now be seen by all.

"And we have vowed that we shall not be governed by a hostile flag of conquest but by a banner of freedom and peace. We have vowed that we shall not see space filled with weapons of mass destruction but with instruments of knowledge and understanding. Yet the vows of this nation can only be fulfilled if we in this nation are first, and therefore we intend to be first."

"For in the final analysis ... our most basic common link is ... that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our childrens' futures and we are all mortal"

Family of missing men hoping for safe return before holidays

Tacoma, Washington: Family of missing men hoping for safe return before holidays
By John Discepolo

Summary
Ten days have passed since three men vanished on their way home from work. No signs of the missing men have turned up, and their family members are heartsick at the thought of spending the holidays without them.

KENT, Wash. -- Ten days have passed since three men vanished on their way home from work.

No signs of the missing men have turned up, and their family members are heartsick at the thought of spending the holidays without them.

Jesus Bejar-Avila of Lakewood, Yazmany Quezada Ortiz of Tacoma and Christian Alberto Rangel of University Place disappeared after clocking out of work. The three had car pooled together to work at Lake Union Wholesale

Florists where they loaded delivery trucks.

Police have recovered an abandoned pick up truck that belonged to one of the men.

Since then, the men's family members their nights have been sleepless, their days have been long and what consumes them are hundreds of questions.

"It's like impossible not to think about it," said Stephanie Mendoza. "I try to stay positive, because just the thought of thinking something bad is happening to them its depressing."

While family members have been pray for the men's safe return, investigators have been searching for clues.

"One of the things we are considering is was this something criminal? Was (it) a drug deal that went bad? Anything over money?" said Lt. Chris Lawler. "We have nothing specific that says one way or the other. That's what's puzzling about this."

Rangel's girlfriend, who is nearly three months pregnant says her boyfriend had every reason in the world to come home.

"He was basically happy, because he thought he couldn't have babies. And when I started feeling sick, went to the doctors and they told us I was pregnant, he was actually happy," said Getsemani Ortiz-Torrez.

The families are distributing flyers to spread the word. But with the holidays right around the corner, it's hasn't been easy. Bejar-Avila's mother says it won't be Christmas until she knows what happened to her son.

Police say they're treating this as a missing persons case, but added the disappearance of all three men is highly unusual.

Why Democrats And Republicans Are Both Wrong About The Bush Tax Cuts

Why Democrats And Republicans Are Both Wrong About The Bush Tax Cuts
December 9th, 2010

All over the Internet, Republican pundits are declaring that extending the Bush tax cuts will save the economy and Democrat pundits are declaring that ending the Bush tax cuts will save the economy. Well, you know what? Nothing will save the U.S. economy. The U.S. government is going to continue to drown in a sea of debt no matter what happens with these tax cuts. State and local governments are also going to continue to drown in a sea of debt. Thousands of factories and millions of jobs are going to continue to be shipped overseas every single year. America is going to continue to transfer tens of billions of dollars of its national wealth to foreign nations every single month. Nothing that the Republicans and Democrats are debating right now is going to do a thing to alter the fundamental problems that the U.S. economy is facing.
