Phil prefers this alternate site obituary.

John Mitchell, a noted area musician and senior activities consultant, passed on to his greatest new job with Our Lord on November 3, 2005 at the age of 71. He was born in Ellensburg on September 11, 1934 and had lived in this area since 1979. John was a retired music educator and very active in bringing happiness to people through music.

For twenty years, John taught public school choral groups in Yakima, Moses Lake, Eugene and Kent. This gave him the background for his second calling, which he began in 1980 by serving people in the senior field and especially adopting new ideas in music activities for people in nursing and retirement homes. In his line of work with seniors, he brough musical enjoyment to about 70 Puget Sound area nursing homes from Puyallup to Bremerton and Olympia to Des Moines. He was also featured presenter at State WSAAP Conventions. He was a nationally certified Activity Consultant and held a lifetime teaching certificate. John was a member of Asbury Methodist Church in Tacoma and also worked in many local churches as a church musician and organist in his journey to serve where he was needed. His favorite saying was that when he died he would ask God "Do you have an jobs open?" John's favorite songs were "Turn, Turn, Turn" and
"Let It Be"

His hobbies included traveling, bowling, gold, square dancing, gardening and collecting eagles and light houses.

John is survived by his daughter Carrie Carroll, her husband Gene, and their two sons Joshua and Matthew (Spokane); son Greg J. Mitchell (Seattle) and his daughter Anna (Puyallup); son David Mitchell (Seattle), sister Lola Whitner (Seattle) and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his very dear friend and life companion Wanda Crawford (Steilacoom), her daughters Denise (Sammamish), Debra (Renton), Donna (University Place), and Diana (Tacoma) and their families. John was preceded in death by his mother and father, Henry and Flossie Mitchell, his brother Lloyd Mitchell, and his sister Eleanor Mitchell.

A celebration of life potluck will be held on Sunday, November 13, 2005 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at United Church in University Place, 3912 Grandview Drive West. In lieu of flowers, it is asked that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Franciscan Hospice of Tacoma.

Don't grieve for me, now I'm free;
I am following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard His call;
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day;
to laugh to love to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I've found that peace at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss;
ah, yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow;
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much;
good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief;
don't lengthen it not with undo grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me;
God wanted me now, He set me free.

Invisible Empire Official Trailer
August 25, 2009

Jason Bermas presents Invisible Empire: A New World Order Defined produced by Alex Jones. The film can be pre-ordered here.... available on April 15th

Mind blowing speech by Robert Welch in 1958 predicting Insiders plans to destroy America

Proof that the NEW WORLD ORDER has been planned by the elite. Robert Welch, Founder of The John Birch Society, predicted today's problems with uncanny accuracy back in 1958 and prescribed solutions in 1974 that are very similar to Ron Paul's positions today. This is proof that there are plans in place by the elite to systemically disassemble US sovereignty.

Walls of Water 10ft High in a Month-Long Mega Hurricane: California Told to Prepare for Biblical 'ARkStorm'

Scientists are now warning Californians that the long-awaited 'big one' earthquake could be the least of their environmental concerns.

Another more deadly threat awaits the West coast of America – in the form of a biblical ‘ARkStorm’, which could bring death and destruction on a scale never before seen.

Walls of water 10ft high, rain falling in feet instead of inches, and nine million people’s homes flooded during a hurricane-like megastorm that could last more than month.

The every-other-century event last happened in 1861 and left the central valley of California impassable.

The cost was impossible to quantify – but should a similar event happen today the damage could total more than $300billion.

The U.S. Geological Survey has now begun planning for the return of the ARkStorm, so named after the boat Noah used to escape the flood in the Bible. The capped-up 'A' and 'R' stand for 'atmospheric river'.

They have recruited 17 researchers and a string of agencies to work with local emergency crews and government officials across California to ensure that should it arrive, they would be best prepared for it.

The team says that a storm on the scale of that which struck in 1861 is ‘inevitable’ and it was widely considered the worst and longest on record.

12 Economic Collapse Scenarios That We Could Potentially See In 2011

12 Economic Collapse Scenarios That We Could Potentially See In 2011

URL: link

What could cause an economic collapse in 2011? Well, unfortunately there are quite a few "nightmare scenarios" that could plunge the entire globe into another massive financial crisis. The United States, Japan and most of the nations in Europe are absolutely drowning in debt. The Federal Reserve continues to play reckless games with the U.S. dollar. The price of oil is skyrocketing and the global price of food just hit a new record high. Food riots are already breaking out all over the world. Meanwhile, the rampant fraud and corruption going on in world financial markets is starting to be exposed and the whole house of cards could come crashing down at any time. Most Americans have no idea that a horrific economic collapse could happen at literally any time. There is no way that all of this debt and all of this financial corruption is sustainable. At some point we are going to reach a moment of "total system failure".

So will it be soon? Let's hope not. Let's certainly hope that it does not happen in 2011. Many of us need more time to prepare. Most of our families and friends need more time to prepare. Once this thing implodes there isn't going to be an opportunity to have a "do over". We simply will not be able to put the toothpaste back into the tube again.

So we had all better be getting prepared for hard times. The following are 12 economic collapse scenarios that we could potentially see in 2011....

#1 U.S. debt could become a massive crisis at any moment. China is saying all of the right things at the moment, but many analysts are openly worried about what could happen if China suddenly decides to start dumping all of the U.S. debt that they have accumulated. Right now about the only thing keeping U.S. government finances going is the ability to borrow gigantic amounts of money at extremely low interest rates. If anything upsets that paradigm, it could potentially have enormous consequences for the entire world financial system.

#2 Speaking of threats to the global financial system, it turns out that "quantitative easing 2" has had the exact opposite effect that Ben Bernanke planned for it to have. Bernanke insisted that the main goal of QE2 was to lower interest rates, but instead all it has done is cause interest rates to go up substantially. If Bernanke this incompetent or is he trying to mess everything up on purpose?

#3 The debt bubble that the entire global economy is based on could burst at any time and throw the whole planet into chaos. According to a new report from the World Economic Forum, the total amount of credit in the world increased from $57 trillion in 2000 to $109 trillion in 2009. The WEF says that now the world is going to need another $100 trillion in credit to support projected "economic growth" over the next decade. So is this how the new "global economy" works? We just keep doubling the total amount of debt every decade?

#4 As the U.S. government and the Federal Reserve continue to pump massive amounts of new dollars into the system, the floor could fall out from underneath the U.S. dollar at any time. The truth is that we are already starting to see inflation really accelerate and everyone pretty much acknowledges that official U.S. governments figures for inflation are an absolute joke. According to one new study, the cost of college tuition has risen 286% over the last 20 years, and the cost of "hospital, nursing-home and adult-day-care services" rose 269% during those same two decades. All of this happened during a period of supposedly "low" inflation. So what are price increases going to look like when we actually have "high" inflation?

#5 One of the primary drivers of global inflation during 2011 could be the price of oil. A large number of economists are now projecting that the price of oil could surge well past $100 dollars a barrel in 2011. If that happens, it is going to put significant pressure on the price of almost everything else in the entire global economy. In fact, as I have explained previously, the higher the price of oil goes, the faster the U.S. economy will decline.

#6 Food inflation is already so bad in some areas of the globe that it is setting off massive food riots in nations such as Tunisia and Algeria. In fact, there have been reports of people setting themselves on fire all over the Middle East as a way to draw attention to how desperate they are. So what is going to happen if global food prices go up another 10 or 20 percent and food riots spread literally all over the globe during 2011?

#7 There are persistent rumors that simply will not go away of massive physical gold and silver shortages. Demand for precious metals has never been higher. So what is going to happen when many investors begin to absolutely insist on physical delivery of their precious metals? What is going to happen when the fact that far, far, far more "paper gold" and "paper silver" has been sold than has ever actually physically existed in the history of the planet starts to come out? What would that do to the price of gold and silver?

#8 The U.S. housing industry could plunge the U.S. economy into another recession at any time. The real estate market is absolutely flooded with homes and virtually nobody is buying. This massive oversupply of homes means that the construction of new homes has fallen off a cliff. In 2010, only 703,000 single family, multi-family and manufactured homes were completed. This was a new record low, and it was down 17% from the previous all-time record which had just been set in 2009.

#9 A combination of extreme weather and disease could make this an absolutely brutal year for U.S. farmers. This winter we have already seen thousands of new cold weather and snowfall records set across the United States. Now there is some very disturbing news emerging out of Florida of an "incurable bacteria" that is ravaging citrus crops all over Florida. Is there a reason why so many bad things are happening all of a sudden?

#10 The municipal bond crisis could go "supernova" at any time. Already, investors are bailing out of bonds at a frightening pace. State and local government debt is now sitting at an all-time high of 22 percent of U.S. GDP. According to Meredith Whitney, the municipal bond crisis that we are facing is a gigantic threat to our financial system....

"It has tentacles as wide as anything I’ve seen. I think next to housing this is the single most important issue in the United States and certainly the largest threat to the U.S. economy."

Former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan is convinced that things are so bad that literally 90% of our states and cities could go bankrupt over the next five years....

#11 Of course on top of everything else, the quadrillion dollar derivatives bubble could burst at any time. Right now we are watching the greatest financial casino in the history of the globe spin around and around and around and everyone is hoping that at some point it doesn't stop. Today, most money on Wall Street is not made by investing in good business ideas. Rather, most money on Wall Street is now made by making the best bets. Unfortunately, at some point the casino is going to come crashing down and the game will be over.

#12 The biggest wildcard of all is war. The Korean peninsula came closer to war in 2010 than it had in decades. The Middle East could literally explode at any time. We live in a world where a single weapon can take out an entire city in an instant. All it would take is a mid-size war or a couple of weapons of mass destruction to throw the entire global economy into absolute turmoil.

Once again, let us hope that none of these economic collapse scenarios happens in 2011.

However, we have got to realize that we can't keep dodging these bullets forever.

As bad as 2010 was, the truth is that it went about as good as any of us could have hoped. Things are still pretty stable and times are still pretty good right now.

But instead of using these times to "party", we should be using them to prepare.

A really, really vicious economic storm is coming and it is going to be a complete and total nightmare. Get ready, hold on tight, and say your prayers.

Easy and inexpensive ways to dramatically improve your health this year

Dear Daily Crux reader,

Each year during the holidays, Dr. David Eifrig publishes a list of his top 12 tips for dramatically improving your health – and life – in the coming year.

A former Goldman Sachs trader turned board-eligible eye surgeon, "Doc" is constantly scouring the medical literature for the latest research and news, and refines this list each year based on what he's discovered.

It's previously only been available to paid subscribers, but for the first time last year, Doc was generous enough to sit down with us and share his advice with Daily Crux readers. This year he agreed to share his updated list once again.

If you're looking for easy, inexpensive, and super-effective ways to get healthier and live better this New Year, be sure to read on.

Good investing,

Justin Brill

The Daily Crux Sunday Interview
Easy and inexpensive ways to dramatically improve your health this year

The Daily Crux: Doc, we know you've been publishing your annual list of top 12 ways to improve your health for several years now. How did you get started doing this?

Dr. David Eifrig: What got me started writing about health initially was a request from my friend Porter Stansberry several years ago. He had asked me to write to his readers twice a month on some of the important health and medicine ideas I'd seen that weren't being talked about, or that people weren't being straightforward about.

And that eventually led me to write a list of top things I thought people should really pay attention to or focus on for better health. It was quite popular, so I decided I would update the list each year for subscribers.

Crux: Why is it important to update the list each year?

Eifrig: Well, it all starts with the medical literature. Because of my background and training in medicine and research, I really love reading things like New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, American Family Physician, and Medline. I read through a lot of journals, I do specific online searches on the latest topics, and even sometimes take research cues from old wives' tales and folk wisdom. I really try to get at the latest evidence-based proof about what works and what doesn't.

So I've been doing this list now for the past five or six years, and it's really stood the test of time for the most part. A few of the items have moved up or down, and one or two new ones have replaced others that have dropped out over time. For example, this year's number 12 has moved down a bit... So let's start with that.

Number 12 this year is fruit. I still believe fruit is a critical component of a healthy diet, but it was up as high as five or six a couple years back. It's moved down based on the evidence I've started to see this year in fruit juice.

If you drink fruit juices – especially when you're having other foods with proteins, fats, and a fair amount of carbohydrates – there's some evidence that the fructose, when highly concentrated like it is in juice, can lead to high triglycerides. These are types of inflammatory chemicals that are created and carried around in your blood vessels.

Now I'm not saying that eating lots of fruit or drinking fruit juice leads to heart attacks or blood disease or anything like that. What I am saying is I've seen some concern this year on the effects of consuming too much fruit juice. And it's possible this could apply to eating large amounts of fruit as well. So I moved fruit down to number 12.

Number 11 is one most people are probably aware of, but is critical to good health, especially this time of year. You notice a lot of people get sick this time of year with things like strep throat, colds, and flu. There's no doubt in my mind that a large part of this is because of Thanksgiving, the holidays, families getting together during breaks from school and such, and people sharing food and drink.

So number 11 is... simply don't do that. And by that I mean, don't share someone else's utensils and don't share someone else's glass. You can obviously eat a piece of food off someone else's plate, but don't feed each other with your utensils, and don't drink from the same cup.

This will prevent a lot of the spreading of infections. You often see where one kid in a family will get something like strep, and next thing you know, the whole family gets it. So just avoid that. It'll really help you stay healthier year-round, but especially during the holidays and wintertime. It's something that's helped me immensely.

Crux: On a similar note, you often hear that washing your hands is important to prevent illness as well. What do you think about the hand sanitizers that have become so popular these days?

Eifrig: We've written about that in Retirement Millionaire recently actually. It's really not necessary to use them, and there are chemicals in some of them that can actually be harmful.

Just washing with water and a little bit of soap gets rid of most of the things you need to worry about on your hands, and you don't have to do it that often. But certainly if you're in a social situation such as a party where you may be shaking hands and also eating, it makes sense to take extra precautions.

What I do is, if I'm shaking with my right hand, I'll be sure to eat food only with my left hand. So I use a different hand for eating foods. It may sound silly, but it's quite effective.

Crux: How about number 10?

Eifrig: Number 10 is clean air. This has moved up from 12 over the past couple years. More and more research is coming out about the negative effects of particles floating in the air we breathe.

So whether you're talking about the streets of London where diesel fumes in the '80s and '90s were everywhere, a smoke-filled bar, or just a dust-filled room... they can all impair your health. The particulates in the air are correlated to inflammatory processes in the lungs, in the blood vessels, and even cardiovascular disease.

I've had an air filter in my bedroom for years. It's really reduced any sort of seasonal allergies and stuffiness I used to get. I also try to keep my pillows clean. I'll run pillows through the dryer and toss them to shake out any kind of dust and stuff that's built up on there. I make sure to sweep the floor regularly and wash it with a wet mop... that kind of thing, just to keep the dust levels low.

I also take my shoes off at the door to keep particulate matter low in the house. That's been shown over and over again to reduce the amount of dirt and dust that gets into a house.

Crux: Good tip. Number nine?

Eifrig: Number nine is a reader favorite for obvious reasons... It's moderate consumption of wine.

There's a famous book I often mention called The French Paradox, that's worth reading for anyone who has an interest in wine and health. There's no doubt wine drinkers have lower rates of death from all causes, but no one's sure exactly why.

The health benefits range from cardiovascular protection to improved moods. Some of the benefits come from laughter that comes when you sip a glass or two of wine. So I encourage people to have a little bit of wine, three or four ounces a day, regularly. I do.

Next up at number eight is music – any kind of music, really.

One of the things that I really enjoy if I'm trying to read or study is the beat of Baroque music. It's well known – and well studied – to improve memory and retention, and I certainly love listening to Baroque when I'm trying to concentrate.

I have a separate set of things I listen to that are softer and quieter when I'm trying to write. But I also have upbeat things I listen to when I'm driving down the street with the top down in my car.

So I just encourage you to enjoy music. It's a celebratory thing really – it's a celebration of life listening to music. And the health benefits can be tremendous.

Crux: Number seven?

Eifrig: Number seven is another tip that has moved up over the years as more research comes out. It's the drug aspirin. Aspirin is really one of the most under-estimated and poorly understood drugs there is.

Some people say if you tried to get aspirin approved by the FDA today it wouldn't get through. It's anti-inflammatory, it affects platelets, it has some anti-clotting effects, and it's even recently been shown to reduce rates of some cancers. There are many more things we don't know about it yet.

Originally, the natural form came from willow bark, and it's been used in old medicine for thousands of years. People would soak willow bark and make teas from it to treat pain. So it's a chemical that's been around a long, long time in human history.

I take a single aspirin once a week, just because the effects last for a while with aspirin, but there are plenty of people whose doctors might recommend taking one baby aspirin a day.

The medical establishment in my opinion exaggerates the riskiness of aspirin. The risk of bleeding from it is actually relatively minimal. So I encourage people to consider that if it makes sense for them.

Crux: Number six?

Eifrig: Number six has to do with smell. Our sense of smell is truly one of the most spectacular things there is. It triggers visual memories, auditory memories, taste memories, experiences we had as kids.

When you smell things like cinnamon, onions, nutmeg, gasoline fumes, it's just incredibly powerful stuff. It's a true stimulant to the brain. It can reduce stress and boost your mood and energy levels. So I encourage you to take advantage of that.

There are some fun studies that have been done on flowers and how flowers affect mood and impressions of people – how well they're liked if they have flowers on a lapel or if they have flowers on their desk. Just the smell of flowers is spectacular.

Essential oils are great too. You can get oils of rose, lavender, and several others. I encourage everyone to take a little time to find their favorite smells and sprinkle them around on your bed sheets, on the carpet, in your bathroom, or wherever you really want to enjoy a pleasant experience.

Crux: What's number five?

Eifrig: Number five is sunlight, and this one's been getting a lot of attention lately.

As most people probably know, the skin, when exposed to sun, triggers the production of Vitamin D, which is an important chemical for maintaining health in the body. It has effects on a wide range of things besides bone health – everything from cancer, to depression, to kidney function, even multiple sclerosis.

So I encourage you to get some sun on your body every day. Certainly during the winter months, it's really important in the Northern hemisphere for people to do that. And you really don't need to worry too much at all about sunscreen, especially in the winter. Even in the heat of summer, so long as you avoid getting burned from long exposures to the direct burning rays of the sun in the middle of the day there's no need to worry.

On a side note, many chemicals in sunscreen have turned out to be strong carcinogens and are probably more harmful to you than the sun will ever be... so that's something to think about as well. You need to be aware of what you're putting on you and your children's skin.

Crux: That's a great point. Number four?

Eifrig: Number four is meditation, and this one has become more and more important for me over the years.

It's a simple thing to do, but paradoxically it can also be a difficult thing to do in our busy, modern world. It's essentially just sitting quietly and relaxing.

I tend to find a moment when I wake up in the morning. I'll sit up in bed, pile some pillows up against the wall, sit quietly for 10 to 15 minutes, and truly just relax my mind.

You can say single syllable words to elicit the physiologic response of meditation. Meditation is actually deeper than the deepest sleep and it triggers brainwaves that help improve memory and health. Chemicals are produced that lower blood pressure, and regular meditation even increases V02 max, which is something that normally requires exercise to improve. Yet here's a simple thing you can do, sitting in bed or sitting in a chair 12-15 minutes a day.

I really think it's important. The other fact is it's dirt cheap. You don't need special training, you don't need special equipment. You don't even need shoes or athletic clothes. You just can sit there in your pajamas and quietly meditate.

Crux: Number three?

Eifrig: Number three is massage. I try to get a massage twice a month. When you do anything physical, your muscle tissues can get bruised or torn or injured. Massage tends to break up some of that material and move poisons and toxins out of tissues into the lymphatic system, which is then drained and cleared from your body.

So that's one of the important aspects of massage... It's great for both muscular repair and relaxation. It's almost like meditation in a way. By physically relaxing and breathing, it's almost a meditative state as well.

Also, I use essential oils of lavender and orange in the massage oil, which are very relaxing smells to me.

Massage also benefits the immune system. Just the act of being touched has health benefits that go beyond toxins being removed from the body. It's almost spiritual to have another human place their hands on you. It can have amazing health benefits if you've never done it.

And of course, if the expense is an issue, you can always share massages or even hand or foot rubs with a partner.

Crux: All right, on to number two.

Eifrig: Number two is movement. This has always been in the top five for me, and it's really just as simple as it sounds.

To me, life really is exemplified by being able to move, in many cases, not all. And if you can move, it's important to move. And expressing that, whether it's walking every day or playing squash, or cycling, or horseback riding... golfing... anything you can do to get moving, is one of the most important and wonderful things you can do.

By the way, you can do two on the list at one time by being in the sun while you're moving.

Moderate exercise, especially weight bearing exercise, also provides pain relief, because of the chemicals that are released. After just 30 minutes or so of walking you get endorphins that remove pain from your body for hours. It can be almost narcotic-like pain relief.

Movement also provides benefits to your mood, which can greatly improve the quality of your sleep. Just get out and try to do something every day, even for a little bit, and you'll feel the health benefits within weeks, if not days or hours. And again, most of these activities are absolutely free.

Crux: What's number one?

Eifrig: Number one is sleep. This has been my top choice for several years running. There's no doubt in my mind that the average person's sleep habits are less than ideal, and I encourage everyone – especially anyone who has problems with their health – to focus immediately on what they're doing with their sleep.

When you start thinking about improving your sleep, it starts with creating a restful place to sleep. That includes not having electromagnetic things in your room like alarm clocks, stereos, and televisions. It includes having dark shades so there's no light from the streetlight outside, and turning off the nightlight on the side of the wall. Some older folks need a little bit of nightlight, but I encourage you to have it as dark as you possibly can. The idea is to make your bedroom a sanctuary, a quiet place where you can go to get away and rest.

I recommend getting seven to eight hours of sleep. I think closer to eight has been shown to be beneficial for most people. Some people I know claim they can only sleep six hours, six-and-a-half hours. But in fact, if they were allowed to sleep – if they didn't have to wake up and didn't have their alarm clocks going off in the morning to get them up – many of them would sleep longer. Even those who do wake up naturally would likely find that after half an hour or an hour, they could fall back to sleep, and sleep for another five or six hours. That's how sleep deprived they are.

But one good thing is it turns out you can make up for sleep loss. So let's say you have a couple nights in a row where you only get six or five-and-a-half hours. You can make it up on the third or fourth night, even as long as a couple weeks after. You can make up for that sleep.

So that's something I try to do now. A couple times a month I just turn everything off on a Saturday morning. I might get up, I might have a little breakfast and walk around a little bit, but then I'll go back and lie down in bed and see if I do get sleepy again. If I do, that's my body's way of saying I'm short of sleep, and I'll go ahead and sleep a little longer.

Sleep is just so vitally important. Besides the obvious physical and mental benefits of being well rested, it also helps keep your immune system strong. I think it really helps you avoid colds. There's also great evidence for helping to prevent cardiovascular disease. So sleep is right up there, number one.

Crux: How about naps? Are they a legitimate substitute if someone isn't getting enough sleep at night?

Eifrig: Yes, they are, because you're getting some of the same brainwave patterns that exist in sleep. Unless you're really sleep deprived, you're not going to get the rapid eye movement or REM sleep you get at night – which is important for immune system function – but you are still getting many of the benefits.

So, yeah, if you only sleep five hours a night but you can nap for an hour or two during the course of the day, great, that gets you up closer to seven, and that's much better.

Crux: If someone's reading this and they don't currently feel healthy, or they don't do a lot of these things and would like to begin, how do you recommend they go about incorporating these tips? Trying to implement several new habits at once can be overwhelming and can often lead to failure. Any suggestions?

Eifrig: That's a great question. I would focus on sleeping and movement to start. Tackle those first because they'll pay the biggest and most immediate dividends.

First and foremost, you want to fix your sleep pattern. Sleep hygiene, fix the place, the room, the space you're in. Get a comfortable pillow. Even the most expensive pillow at a Target or a Wal-Mart is only about $20, and there are a ton of choices for less than that. You're on your pillow for a third of your life, so find yourself a comfortable one. Go find the most comfortable mattress you can afford, too.

Then start walking. Make sure you get up and try to walk every day. Start with 10 minutes, go to 15 minutes, go to 20 minutes, go to 30 minutes, every single day. I think it's better to walk after a meal than before, but it's OK if you can only do it before.

It can take up to 21 days to develop a new habit, so stick to those until you're comfortable. Once you've got those under your belt, you can begin to try the others. Feel free to start with the ones that make the most sense to you. This is about enjoying life as well as improving your health.

Crux: Sounds good, Doc. Thanks for talking with us.

Eifrig: My pleasure. Thanks for having me.

Identity Theft: Protect Yourself

Identity Theft:
Protect Yourself | Protect Yourself
Against Phishing | more...

Slide 1

Welcome to Service Credit Unions online seminar, "Identity Theft: Protecting Yourself". My name is Nancy Layton and Ill be the host of todays seminar.

This presentation will discuss what identity theft is, some types of identity theft, and how to protect yourself. Youll get some pointers on what to do if you are a victim.

Slide 2

What is identity theft? Its when someone uses YOUR personal identifying information to commit fraud or theft.

For the 9th year in a row, identity theft was the #1 consumer complaint, accounting for 26% of the 1.2 million complaints received by the Federal Trade Commission.*

Slide 3

Here are but a few ways that people can steal your identity:

Dumpster Diving is when someone goes through your dumpster, garbage, or trash.

Have you ever been at the checkout line in the grocery store, used your debit or ATM card and as you enter your PIN, feel that the person behind you in line is standing a little too close? They could be shoulder surfing taking a look over your shoulder to see what number youre entering for your PIN.

Pretext calling is when the crook places a call and then pretends to be someone theyre not, such as a representative from your financial institution or credit card company.

There are many types of theft – mail theft is when someone tampers with or steals your mail; theft in the workplace can happen if you leave your wallet or billfold in an unsafe location, or you leave confidential information out.

Slide 4

Skimming is a small device that the crook will place in an ATM card reader. Sometimes they stick out of the machine. Do not use an ATM if it looks at all suspicious and always be sure to use a secure ATM, one that has cameras.

A criminal could change your address and have your information sent to a different address. This gives the perpetrator access to your statement and account number.

Phishing is an ongoing problem – you receive an unsolicited email, posing as a legitimate company, such as your financial institution and asking you to verify personal information such as account numbers or promising some type of benefit if you provide your account information.

Vishing is like phishing, but its done by the phone. The victim is asked to call a particular number, and when they do, they may be asked to enter credit card numbers or punch in their social security.

Slide 5

When someone steels your identity – exactly what can they do?

Go on a spending spree – using your credit or debit card Open new credit card accounts – all under your name
Take out loans in your name
Establish phone or wireless service – in your name Drain your account(s)

In general, they can make your life very difficult.

Slide 6

Contrary to what you may think, most identity theft doesnt happen online, in a virtual world, it happens in the real world.

Slide 7

How can you protect yourself and STOP identity theft before it starts? One of the first things to do is after you pay your bills, either keep them in a safe place or destroy them – shred or burn!

If you are mailing your bills, consider taking them to the post office or use the corner US postal service mail box. If you put them in your mail box that has no security, someone could take the payment, which would give them access to your personal information. And speaking of writing bills, make sure that you cant see any kind of confidential information in the window of the return envelope. Its even better if you use home banking and bill pay. Once you set up the accounts, its so easy to make your payments!

Consider receiving your statements on line as well.

Slide 8

If you are using an ATM debit card, you may want to consider using the credit option. This way you dont need to put in your PIN. If you do use your PIN, make sure that nobody is standing behind you watching what youre doing. Shield your transaction and the screen if possible.

Dont carry around your social security card – as a matter of fact, keep the minimum number of ID and credit cards on your person that you possibly can.

One of the most important things to do is be vigilant. Make sure there is not someone standing right behind you 'shoulder surfing, looking over your shoulder and looking at what youre doing. Dont toss your bills, convenience checks, even pre-approvals you receive in the mail. Shred or keep them safe. Be aware of your surroundings and be aware of what youre doing!

Slide 9

The next few slides will address credit card fraud.

Offline use
If possible, dont let the card out of your sight when paying.
Only give your credit card number over the phone if it was you that made the call, and not the other way around.
Carry your cards separately from your wallet.
Void incorrect receipts

Slide 10

Online use
Make sure you know the site asking for your details.
DO NOT give out your credit card information in an email, its better to give the information over the phone.

Slide 11

Use your credit card online at trusted, secure sites.
You can tell a website is secure when a padlock appears in the browser, and also when the website begins with "https" instead of "http".

Slide 12

Here are some general guidelines on how to protect your cards and stop identity theft before it starts:

Open your statements and bills as soon as you receive them. Make sure that you recognize all the transactions.

If not, contact the card company immediately. When done with the statement file it safely away, shred, or burn it.

Slide 13

Sign new or replacement cards as soon as you receive them.
Cut up or shred your expired cards
Make sure you cut through the magnetic strip
Dont keep your PIN numbers written down in your wallet or purse.
Report stole cards to the issuer immediately.

If you lose your credit or charge cards or you realize that theyre lost or stolen, immediately call the issuer. Many companies have a 24 hour toll-free number. By law, once you report the loss or theft, you have no further responsibility for unauthorized charges. In any event, your maximum liability under the law is $50 per card.

Slide 14

Another very commonplace attempt at stealing your identity is called 'phishing.

A simple definition of Phishing is when Internet hackers use emails as bait to "fish" for your financial information.

The sole purpose is to trick you to give out personal or financial information.

It is a continuing problem. Whats so frightening is that many crooks who use phishing are incredibly crafty! If you receive an email that you arent sure about, DO NOT RESPOND. And if think it may be legit, contact the company, but DO NOT follow any links in the body of the email!

Slide 15

Because this is an ongoing problem, Service Credit Union has a flash presentation that specifically addresses phishing. It may be accessed at www.servicecu.org/webinars/phishing. The presentation is 5 minutes in length.

Slide 16

How can you tell if youre a victim?

Monitor your financial accounts – look for withdrawals, look for charges
Failing to receive bills or other mail
Receiving credit cards for which you did not apply
Being denied credit for no apparent reason
Youre contacted about merchandise which you did not purchase

Slide 17

If youve taken the steps in the previous slide, and you feel that you have been victimized, here are some steps you can take:

Visit the Federal Trade Commissions identity theft website www.consumer.gov/idtheft
Contact one of the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on your credit report:
Equifax, Experian, TransUnion
Contact companies to close any accounts you know or suspect have been open fraudulently.
File a report with your local police department.
File a complaint with the FTC.

Slide 18

Service Credit Union offers a service for credit union members who believe they may be a victim: ID

Safe Choice.

$300, Elvis Presley postcard

Elvis Presley postcard | $300

Philip Atkins wrote:

Famous Elvis Presley postcard taken in front of his army unit in Mannheim, Germany found in an old book. - www.bit.ly/elvis2010

Chances are you've never seen this photo before today. Elvis is shown standing in front of his army unit in Mannheim, Germany.

I purchased this post card in the city of Luxemburg sometime during the mid 1980's when I visited the American cemetery in Hamm where General Patton is buried.

It was the last one on the rack and I grab it and eventually misplaced it for more than 10 years. It was found today in one of my old favorite books titled; The Life And Times Of Jesus The Messiah by Edersheim.

I once witnessed a video of Elvis in concert where some young girls held up a banner that read, Elvis The King. Elvis immediately stopped the concert and replied, 'there is only one King and it's Jesus Christ, Lord & Saviour of heaven and earth'.

I've set an asking price but if someone offers more, since it's possibly worth a lot more than the asking price, it would go to the highest bidder.

I honestly doubt there's many of these orginals left on the planet.

Good Day,

Philip

Hope everyone has a great weekend too!

Interview with GOD

Interview with GOD
Bible Lessons - eBooks
ebook.has.it

eBook download: Major Prophets - Atkins & Assoc.

In the summer of 2001, I spent a couple of days developing an online presentation, Interview with God. The words had touched me years earlier, and I vowed to do something with them someday. I finished the presentation and uploaded it to a web site, pleased that I had finally made good on my promise. Four days later, I received word that half a million people had viewed the site, and that it would be shut down because of the high traffic. I ended up hosting the presentation on my web site, reata.org where millions have viewed it and passed it on to their friends and family. Interview with God has since been translated into many different languages. I began to receive hundreds of e-mails daily from people all over the world who wanted to express their appreciation, share their beliefs, and tell their individual stories.

Several people have asked me why I originally put the presentation together, and I tell them I created it because I know the message is true. I know the person about whom it was written. His voice is unmistakable. His words speak to a deep place within me, and they bring life. He can heal, encourage, counsel and cause a change in anyone who will allow His Spirit to work in them.

As a child, I remember hearing stories in Vacation Bible School about people who spoke to God face to face and shared relationships that were meaningful, extraordinarily common, unrealistically real. I assumed that our distance was spatial, determined by the course of history rather than the course of a life.

The beauty of Interview with God is the reflection of the flaws of humanity against the powerful love of God. A love that is not ignorant of our nature, but stronger than any of our weaknesses. The interview shows that God is quite aware, even if we are not, of our discontent, ignorance, failures, unforgiveness and self doubt, and I guess just about everyone can find comfort in that.

Recently over lunch, I was telling a friend about the whole experience, about the phone calls, and the emails, about the record number of visits to the web site, about such a small thing becoming so big. Interview with God did not begin as my most important work, I tell her It was by no means close to the biggest project I’ve worked on. It wasn’t the most difficult or the most challenging. She stops me. "But it was enough." And so it was.

I didn’t write the words to the Interview with God. I didn’t take the photos that accompany those words in the online presentation. I just put them together and made them available for anyone who needed them, anyone who could be touched by them. I hope that you too find the everlasting peace and eternal "enoughness" of our Creator.
