Summer Concerts in the Park: Thursday, July 29, 7-9 pm Ober Park Tacoma, WA Free
Craicmore Celtic music touches heart, mind and soul
Drawing from the musical roots of Scotland and Ireland, let the music stir you when California-based Celtic band Craicmore arrives at Ober Park in July, complete with kilts, pipes, bodhran and ‘great fun’ (loose Irish translation of their name).
Considering themselves a contemporary traditional Celtic group, the quartet claims diverse influences as Afro Celts, Chieftains and Pogues, American rock and roll and Australian indigenous music. Craicmore includes talents of Nancy Johnston, vocals, bodhran, hard shoe; John MacAdams, vocals, guitar, percussion, didgeridoo; Sean FayeCullen, vocals and bass; and Dave Champagne, flute, whistles and pipes.
Through a series of chance meetings at L.A. Celtic Arts Center’s Monday night jams, their mutual commitment to the music helped establish opportunities to perform street fairs, festivals and cultural events throughout the U.S. Nearly 20 years later with three critically acclaimed CDs to their credit, the group has traveled as far as Shanghai, China, and tours throughout the U.S., Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand. This is their first concert on Vashon.
Craicmore says they don’t do rebel songs or drinking songs. With this group it’s all about the music and enriching the tradition. They sing “Cunla” in Irish, in three-part harmony, deliver “Mairi’s Wedding” complete with electric bass solo, and feature conga drum in their show-stopping jig and reel combination, “Cliffs of Moher / Sally Gardens.”
“Wonderfully harmonious Gaelic vocals, both Scots and Irish versions, and crisp instrumental sets. Lead singer Nancy Johnston has a velvety voice,” commented Dirty Linen. For more information and a listen, go to Craicmore.com. The Summer Concerts in the Park Series is cosponsored by Vashon Park District, Vashon Allied Arts, Giraffe and 4Culture.
A Still Small Voice {ref.} October 25, 2009 Author: Philip Atkins
A clear voice spoke to me in Alaska in 1982 and said, "Philip, quickly, get out of the way, now!"
I obeyed and moved immediately after hearing those words spoken to my conscience.
A vehicle known as a bulldog had hit the opposite side of the vehicle in which I had been standing. The bulldog had clipped the driver side front bumper.
This crash basically caused two large trucks parked next to each other to make contact. I would have been crushed to death in the torso with no way possible in which to escape. It would have been a death squeeze.
We had moved quickly to the inside of the front bumper on the US Army 5 Ton truck{photos} in which we had been leaning.
This was only seconds before we heard and experienced the collision.
Interesting enough I had been talking with SSG Quesida and when I moved I had encouraged him to move too. Poor SSG Quesida was so frightened by the event that he never had a chance to speak a word until he ask me why we had moved.
I believe that God probably starting working in the life of SSG Quesida that very same day!
I've been saved by many miracles but this was the first time in which I heard a still small voice.
U.S. EQUIPMENT ON TRACK MOVING SMOOTHLY OUT OF IRAQ, GENERAL SAYS - U.S. forces equipment currently in theater is expected to be moved out by Sept. 1, when the military-led operations transition to a civilian lead, the commanding general of U.S. forces there, said yesterday. Army Gen. Ray Odierno said U.S. forces will continue to assist Iraq in building its forces and, beyond 2011, there will continue to be some technical support as Iraq buys U.S. weapons systems. In the future, Iraq plans to equip its forces with U.S. tanks and aircraft.” They’ve already committed to M1A1 tanks," Odierno told the Defense Writers Group. "They committed to C-130s; they have put a Letter of Request in for F-16s--we're still working our way through that. They have bought some helicopters from the United States, so we'll continue to provide technical advice to them." Additionally, post-2011, an Office of Security Cooperation will be set up inside the U.S. Embassy. For example, Iraq has an approved Foreign Military Sale of 140 M1A1 Abrams tanks from the Army inventory, tank recovery vehicles, Humvees and other equipment for approximately $2 billion. The request was made in December 2008. Action on the sale is in abeyance until Iraq's government is in place. General Dynamics [GD], Honeywell [HON] and General Motors [GM] Allison Transmission Division would be the contractors. (Source: Defense Daily) - bit.ly/Iraq2011

HOUSE DEMS PUSH FOR DOD BUDGET CUT, MISSION REEXAMINATION - House Democrats said yesterday efforts to save money at the Pentagon should include a reduction of the size of the Defense Department's budget and an examining the U.S. military's overall mission. At a congressional oversight panel hearing on "rethinking our defense budget," Rep. John Tierney (D-Mass.) said current efforts to find efficiencies in the Pentagon and reform the acquisition system are not enough. "If we were to concentrate just on making the military we have more efficient--getting rid of some waste, fraud, and abuse--are we all pretty much in agreement, that would be a far less significant savings than if you really take a look at the mission and take a look at just how we structure, what are the purposes of the mission of the Department of Defense," Tierney asked a panel of think-tank experts, none of whom disagreed. "It is critical that the commission scrutinize all aspects of our budget, including the defense budget as it formulates its suggestions," Tierney said. ( . . . ) Frank, a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), created a Sustainable Defense Task Force that is calling for trimming the Pentagon's budget by $960 billion over the next decade. The task force wants to cut weapon systems including the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, and MV-22 tilt-rotor Osprey aircraft, and reduce the target number of Navy ships from 313 to 230.Frank yesterday also reiterated the call, which he has been making on television news programs, that the United States should spend less money defending western Europe. An artist from Australia is receiving a barrage of criticism for a YouTube video that shows her Holocaust- survivor father and other members of her family dancing on the grounds of Auschwitz to the tune of Gloria Gaynor's disco-era hit "I Will Survive."
That's according to various reports this week that state that the video has been causing an uproar on Twitter, Facebook and other sites. You can judge it for yourself by watching the clip above. Much of the video (though not all of it) takes place on various locations of Auschwitz, the former Nazi death camp where untold numbers perished during World War II.
In certain scenes, the dancers wear T-shirts that read "Survivor" across the chest. In other scenes, they dance under the infamous "Work Will Set You Free" sign.
According to the reports, the person behind the clip is named Jane Korman, an artist from Melbourne, Australia. Her father, Adolek Kohn, is an Auschwitz survivor who is now in his late 80's.
We'd like to know what you think of the "dancing Auschwitz" video. Is it truly appalling, or are people making a big deal about nothing? Take the poll and feel free to leave your comments as well.
Slideshow presentation of my visit to Wissembourg, Lauterbourg & Colmar, France in 2008. If you'd like to order a DVD version of this presentation please send me a message with your mailing address and contact information. A small fee will be charged for my service and mailing charge. I hope to charge between ten to twenty dollars for the DVD version.
I'm currently seeking feedback on the quality and presentation of this slideshow and all comments are welcomed. I hope to produce more slideshows like the France DVD of Krakow & Auschwitz, Poland and Normandy, France. I also have hundreds of photos taken in Kitzbuhel, Austria that are simply beautiful.
The DVD includes hundreds of photos and the runtime is approximately 20 minutes in length.
The slideshow was produced by using the Microsoft Movie Maker and set to music.
In My Opinion,
Traveling the world for 30 years I feel has given me a good perspective on the new world order. The horrible news events that we see daily on our TV sets are a constant reminder of the state of mankind. Nevertheless, we've been given life by our creator in which to enjoy, share and be involved in the affairs of our families and our community. Together we can make a difference and lets share the life that is truly worth living.
Good Day,
Philip
