America 2011

This is AWESOME!!!!

Can You Believe a Teenager Did This?

There is a huge rock near a gravel pit on Hwy. 25 in rural Iowa. For generations, kids have painted slogans, names, and obscenities on this rock, changing its character many times. A few months back, the rock received its latest paint job, and since then it has been left completely undisturbed.

It ' s quite an impressive sight. Be sure to scroll down and check out the multiple photos. (all angles) of the rock.

I thought the flag was draped over the rock, but it ' s not. It ' s actually painted on the rock too.

Here ' s the artist:

Ray ' Bubba ' Sorensen.

AWESOME Work, RAY ...

Thank you!

Pass it on.

What's the first thing you should do in an emergency? Nothing, the first step is to do absolutely nothing but to look around, stop and think to take in the facts of what's actually happened. The Emergent Mindset's Ray Clouout. It's what he does to keep Washington workers safe. Training workers to get past the first few moments of an emergency. The edrenline rush kicks in, the mind switches to fight or flight mode and often times deadly mistakes are made in an emergency. Even a momentary pause to think can save your life. Stop and think, analize the situation of what's going on around you in an emergency. Survey your resources of what you have and don't have at the moment. Make a plan and act on that plan. People who develop a plan during an emergency are the ones who often survive when others don't.

Turtleback Farm Inn

Turtleback Farm Inn
Eastsound, Washington

You're sitting outside on the back porch, gorging on a second helping of buttermilk pancakes, looking out over a meadow where lambs are grazing. The day is full of possibilities: Do you feel like reading the afternoon away, staring at the passing clouds and enjoying the silence? Taking a scenic waterfront drive around the island? Or are you up for something more ambitious—like kayaking or hiking up Mt. Constitution? Cell phones don’t work here. There are no TVs, no computers. You can’t check your email—and better yet, you find you don’t want to. You are truly off the grid at the bucolic Turtleback Inn on Orcas Island, an elegant B&B that has perfected a genuinely relaxing San Juan Islands atmosphere.

Setting: Island, working farm, mountains
Vibe: Bucolic, off-the-grid, idyllic, rustic
Perks: Farm-fresh breakfast on the porch, clawfoot tubs
Nearby: Turtleback Mountain Preserve, whale-watching, kayaking (more below)

Munich's Hofbräuhaus

Rick's Video of the Month: February 2011
Munich's Hofbräuhaus

Munich is Germany's beer capital, and the Hofbräuhaus is the city's best-known beer hall — with rivers of beer, cheap food, boisterous atmosphere, and raucous oompah music. In this 80-second clip from his TV series, Rick shows that you don't need to visit during Oktoberfest to drink-in the Bavarian beer hall experience.

BIOGRAPHY

Ian has been singing in bands since age thirteen. It wasn't long before he learned to play guitar and started to create his own musical world: "When you don't have cash for new CD's, might as well make your own music, there is no better way to listen to something you're going to love; it's like cooking, if you don't like green peppers, don't put any in what your making". After some time playing in bars with different bands, Ian built his own little recording studio at home and started a solo project.

Ian grew up in Montreal his teenage years went by in a nice basement playing drums and making some noise. That's actually where it all started. He sang in a band called Jim-Bob and the flying chickens with some guys with whom he developed a strong friendship. Time went by, some left, and new ones came. They played hard, partied hard too.

A few bands later, Ian ended up working with one of his band members, Guy Dubuisson, on some instrumental projects hoping they could get some attention from the advertising business. It's from Guy's skills with audio, computers and music knowledge that Ian learned how to record his own stuff, alone, in his bedroom, which eventually lead to his first album.

"For Insecurity, I borrowed some money from my mom and bought myself a microphone and a computer. With what I could afford, I'm very proud of the sound quality of my album. The room wasn't ideal either, sometimes, if you listen carefully, you can hear a bus or a car go by and my roommates talking in the living room or watching a movie. Life on De Lorimier Street in Montrea..."

After the debut album was done, Ian found himself shopping around for a label, a team, a distributor, someone, anyone. He sent hundreds of albums around and one of them ended up in the hands of a television show A&R who invited Ian to do his first TV appearance. He sang Fake World on Belle & Bum which is aired live every saturday night. The house band liked his music and therefore helped in Ian delivering a solid performance. Enough so that Audiogram's president Michel Bélanger who was watching the show that evening had his team get in touch with Ian.

Ian's second outing Speak your mind was co-produced by Ian Kelly and Montreal-based producer Guillaume Chartrain.

Nassim "Black Swan" Taleb: Forget Egypt...

Nassim "Black Swan" Taleb: Forget Egypt...
Another critical Middle Eastern country could plunge into crisis
Thursday, February 03, 2011

From Bloomberg:

Saudi Arabia is "perfectly unstable," like Egypt, where 10-day protests are threatening the 30-year rule of President Hosni Mubarak, Nassim Taleb, author of "Black Swan," said today.

Taleb, a principal at Universa Investments LP whose 2007 bestselling book argued that history is littered with rare events that can't be predicted by trends, said that countries like Lebanon and Italy that suffer recurring political crises are safer for investors.

"A perfectly fragile country is a country, say like Egypt" before "the recent events, where there is no variation, and then – puff – you got a crisis and it's mayhem," Taleb told an conference in Moscow hosted by Troika Dialog. "So Egypt is perfectly unstable, Saudi Arabia, countries like that.''

Supporters of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who has been in power since 1981, clashed today for the second day in Cairo's Tahrir Square with demonstrators who have been demanding the 82-year-old leader's resignation since Jan. 25.

The 86-year-old ruler of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah, has backed the Egyptian government and condemned the protesters, while trying to address imbalances in the largest Arab economy. The government announced in August a $385 billion, five-year spending plan as the kingdom tries to reduce a jobless rate of as high as 43 percent for Saudis between the ages of 20 and 24.

Pact With Clerics

Almost 40 percent of the population in Saudi Arabia, which is the world's largest oil exporter, is under 15. The country is ruled by the Al Saud family, which relies on support from the Sunni Muslim clerical establishment under a 1744 pact.

The political turmoil that engulfed the Middle East, sparked by last month's ouster of Tunisian leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, is continuing to spread, with protests now in Yemen. With high youth populations, countries in the region suffer from unemployment and dissatisfaction with corruption and long-entrenched leaders.

The cost of insuring the sovereign debt of Saudi Arabia has soared 56 percent since Jan. 27 to 117.4, according to CMA prices for credit-default swaps.

"I don't focus on political stability, nor do I specialize in olive groves," Taleb said. "My specialty is risk and fragility."
